A gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda currently costs USD 1,500 per person per trek. This fee is set by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and includes the park entrance, ranger guides, and one magical hour with a gorilla family. Although it may seem high, the cost directly supports conservation efforts, community development, and ensures sustainable protection of the endangered mountain gorillas. Permits are limited and in high demand, so early booking is strongly recommended — ideally 3 to 6 months in advance.
Gorilla trekking requires moderate physical fitness, as it involves hiking through steep, muddy, and sometimes slippery terrain in search of the gorillas. Treks can last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of your assigned gorilla family. If you can handle a long forest hike with some uphill sections, you’ll do just fine. Porters are available at a small fee to help carry your bag and assist during the trek — they are a great support and part of the local community conservation program.
The best time to go gorilla trekking in Rwanda is during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February. During these months, trails are drier and easier to navigate, and photography is generally clearer. However, gorilla trekking is possible year-round, and some travelers prefer the green seasons (March–May and October–November) when the forests are lush, and there are fewer tourists. Whichever time you choose, gorilla sightings are guaranteed.
To protect both visitors and gorillas, Rwanda has clear gorilla trekking rules. The main guidelines include: • Only 8 visitors are allowed per gorilla family per day. • You must keep a 7-meter (21 feet) distance from the gorillas. • No flash photography is allowed. • Do not touch the gorillas, even if they approach you. • If you are sick (flu, cold, etc.), you are not allowed to trek to prevent disease transmission. • Follow your ranger’s instructions at all times. These guidelines ensure the safety of both the gorillas and trekkers, while maintaining the natural balance of their fragile habitat.
It’s best to book your gorilla trekking permit and safari accommodation at least 3 to 6 months in advance, especially during peak season (June–September). Gorilla permits are limited to protect the gorillas, and high-quality lodges near Volcanoes National Park tend to fill up quickly.
