This 5-day safari takes you deep into the rugged northern circuit of Kenya, combining the raw wilderness of Samburu National Reserve with the wide-open landscapes of Buffalo Springs National Reserve. These sister parks, separated by the Ewaso Nyiro River, are less crowded than the Maasai Mara yet equally rewarding. Expect sightings of the rare Samburu Special Five — reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk — as well as elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, crocodiles, and over 450 bird species. The journey begins with a restful night in Nairobi before you head north for an unforgettable adventure.

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met by a Scenery Adventures representative and transferred to your Nairobi hotel. Depending on your arrival time, optional excursions can be arranged such as visiting the Giraffe Centre, the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, or the Karen Blixen Museum. This overnight stay in Nairobi allows you to recover from your international flight and prepare for the safari ahead. Accommodation in Nairobi will be on a bed and breakfast basis.
After breakfast, you will depart Nairobi at 07:00hrs, driving north through central Kenya with a stop at the equator in Nanyuki. The journey takes about six hours and offers views of Mount Kenya on a clear day. You will arrive at your lodge or camp in Samburu in time for lunch. In the afternoon, you will set off on your first game drive in Samburu National Reserve. The semi-arid reserve is famous for its wildlife concentration along the Ewaso Nyiro River, where elephants gather and crocodiles lurk in the waters. This will also be your chance to begin spotting the Samburu Special Five. Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge or camp.
After an early breakfast, you will spend the day exploring Samburu National Reserve with a picnic lunch carried along to maximize time in the wild. The reserve offers dramatic landscapes of riverine forests, rolling hills, and open savannah. Wildlife is abundant, with elephants often seen in large family groups and predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards frequently encountered. The rare Samburu Special Five can also be spotted grazing and browsing across the plains. With over 450 species of birds recorded, Samburu is also a birdwatcher’s paradise. After a full day in the reserve, you will return to your lodge or camp for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, you will cross into Buffalo Springs National Reserve for another full-day adventure with a picnic lunch. This reserve is known for its open plains and natural springs that attract herds of elephants, lions, cheetahs, and other game. Its more open terrain offers excellent opportunities for photography and game viewing compared to Samburu’s rugged landscapes. As you drive through its vast savannahs, you will enjoy sightings of wildlife and birds in a quieter and more peaceful setting. In the late afternoon, you will return across the river to Samburu for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, you may enjoy an optional short morning game drive before checking out. You will then begin the journey back to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon. You will be dropped off at your Nairobi hotel or at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward flight.
Many people travelling to the African continent have questions about safety. Is Kenya safe to travel to? Our answer is clear: YES! Kenya is definitely a safe country to visit, especially for people going on organised game drives with private guides as you will do with us. There are definitely some places to avoid in big cities like Nairobi or Mombasa, but – as with all big cities – by taking some precautions, you’ll be fine. We advise, for example, to leave the hotel at night with a driver and not to go strolling around alone. Also be aware not to wear big and visible jewellery, and keep an eye on your valuables.
This is an exclusive, private safari that allows you to travel at your own pace. This trip is made just for you, exactly as you want it! And lastly, knowing your wishes, your personal guide will give you the right tips, turning your trip into an unforgettable experience.
